Winchester is located at the apex of the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia and is full of history. It was once Shawnee Indian camping grounds that Pennsylvania Quakers settled in 1732. George Washington arrived in this area of what is now Frederick County at the age of 16 to survey the lands of Thomas and the Sixth Lord Fairfax. Soon it became his political and military training ground. This was in the middle of the 18th century. During the French and Indian War, Washington constructed Fort Loudoun. At 26, he won the election to his first elected position as the country's representative to the House of Burgesses. Daniel Morgan's Riflemen from Frederick County were among the first soldiers to support Washington in his fight against the British during the Revolutionary War. Winchester and the surrounding countryside served as housing for war prisoners.

George Washington's headquarters, "Stonewall" Jackson's headquarters, and Union General Philip Sheridan's headquarters, where he began his famous 12-mile ride on October 19, 1864, were all located in Winchester. Today, many historical remnants can be found in Winchester and Frederick County, including Lord Fairfax's tomb in the church's yard and General Daniel Morgan's home and grave. The Hollingsworth residence was built in 1754 and is now fully furnished with artifacts from the 18th century. Visit the National Cemetery and the Confederate Cemetery, which contain thousands of heroes' graves. Explore the ruins of a former church that served as a barrack during the Revolutionary War and the Hopewell Meeting House founded in 1734. You will also see the Belle Grove Plantation, which was built in 1794.

The city serves as a processing hub and is located in the center of an apple-growing region. Every year in April and May, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival occurs. The state arboretum, Orland E. White Arboretum at Blandy Farm, is located just east of Winchester.
