At 9,940 acres, Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama’s largest state park. It’s located approximately 20 miles south of Birmingham and is home to attractions such as the Alabama Wildlife Center, Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, and Oak Mountain BMX Track. The park’s stunning physical landscape makes for an unforgettable experience, but when you add in over 50 miles of scenic trails and activities include swimming, camping, fishing, horseback riding, and golf, you’ve got yourself a trip that the entire family is sure to enjoy.
Among the pine-studded ridges and lush green hardwood bottoms of the park, you can spot a variety of native and rescued birds, such as the Eastern bluebird, raptors and other woodland birds. The weather at the state park varies greatly between seasons, with summer reaching highs of 92°F, while the temperature can fall to just 1°F in winter.

There are plenty of camping opportunities in and around Oak Mountain State Park, including both within tents and RVs. Less than 15 minutes’ drive from the state park isBirmingham South RV Park, which has 100 RV sites on offer with full hookups. You’ll also find a ton of on-site activities here, so there’s something to keep every member of the family entertained (including your dog!). Nightly rates start at $38.

Hoover Met Complex RV Park
TheHoover Met Complex RV Park is in close proximity to local restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, meaning you’ll be just a short distance away from a variety of events and activities. It features 170 pull-through parking sites and each site is equipped with full hookups. Rates start at $40 per day.

Cherokee Campground & RV Park
Less than a 30-minute drive from the state park is theCherokee Campground & RV Park, offering 98 RV sites, full hookups, beautiful surrounds, and a 16-acre lake. The average nightly rate is $30 per site.

What to Do at
Oak Mountain State Park
Inside Oak Mountain State Park
If you thought the camping opportunities were impressive, wait until you hear about the activities available to visitors within the state park. From watersports and golf, to hiking, horseback riding, boating and more – there’s something for absolutely everyone at Oak Mountain State Park!
Some of the most popular things to do within the state park include:
Archery : Fancy a spot of archery during your stay? The park also has an archery park within its grounds, offering activities such as recreational shooting, competitive tournaments and outdoor educational programming.
Golfing : Oak Mountain Golf Course is a public, 18-hole championship course which is repeatedly rated by Golf Digest to be among the top 50-75 public courses in the United States. Tee times should be reserved five days in advance. If you don’t own golf clubs (or forgot to bring yours), the pro shop rents golf clubs at a fee of $25.
Fishing : The state park is also home to two 85-acre lakes and one 60-acre lake, which is stocked with largemouth bass, bream, catfish and crappie to fish from. Tackle, bait, and other supplies are for sale at Flipside, but just keep in mind that State Law requires fishing licenses for both Alabama residents and non-residents.
Boating : You can also enjoy the lakes from a variety of water vessels and equipment, including pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, and standup paddleboards. Rental prices start at just $14 per hour and vessels can be rented from the Marina (located on Terrace Drive) or from Flipside Watersports (located on the lower back lake).
Hiking : Oak Mountain State Park has approximately 25 miles of hiking trails that people enjoy on a daily basis. These trails lead you throughout the park’s beautiful landscape and suit a variety of hiking levels – from beginners to the more experienced.
Swimming : Did you know the state park also offers two beaches for you to enjoy swimming, soaking up the sun, and playing in the sand? One is located on Terrace Drive (which is open to the general public) and there is one available for campground guests in the campground.
How to Get to
Oak Mountain State Park
The state park is located 20 miles south of Birmingham. From Birmingham, Get on I-65 S. Follow I-65 S to AL-119 S/Hwy 119 S/Cahaba Valley Rd in Shelby County. Take exit 246 from I-65 S. Take John Findlay Dr to Terrace Dr in Pelham.
