Hawaii’s Makena State Park is located near Makena in Maui. The two sandy beaches make the perfect place to relax for those looking for a day of water fun. Added together, the beaches are over 3 miles long, so everyone can find a place on them that perfectly meets their needs. In between the two beaches is a 360-foot dormant cinder cone volcano. Makena State Park is located 20 miles south of Kahului, 11.4 miles south of Kihei, and about 32 miles southeast of Lahaina.

While there are no lifeguards on duty, many people choose to go swimming in the water, which seldom gets above shoulder-deep near the shore. The clear water in this location makes it a favorite among snorkelers. Fishing is also available.

Makena State Park
Makena State Park is easy to reach from Wailea, and the drive along the beach is beautiful. Head west on Makena Road and make sure to turn left when the road turns left. Continue on Makena Road and Makena Alanui Drive to reach this park.

The climate of Makena State Park is like most Hawaiian Islands. The temperature is never colder than 65° F, never hotter than 86° F. The weather is dry, raining only about once or twice a month.
You can see monk seals and sea turtles at the area's beaches along with mongoose and chameleons along the trails. If you look skyward, you might even see one of only two mammals native to Hawaii: the hoary bat.
There are no designated RV campsites at Makena State Park. However, there are some nearby campsites, and you would need to rent a campervan to be able to use them. The sites don't have water, electricity, or sewer hookups.
Although dogs may be crated, caged, or on a short leash, they are prohibited from entering structures and beaches. It's probably best not to bring your pets to Makena State Park. The nearby campsites aren't pet-friendly either.
