Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

In the fall of 1957, a national spotlight shone on Little Rock Central High School as nine African American students became the first to attend the newly desegregated school. Initially blocked by the Arkansas National Guard, the students were finally able to enter under the protection of the Little Rock police and, eventually, by 20 men from the 101st Airborne Infantry Division. When you visit the historic site, you can stand on the same streets where a thousands-strong mob terrorized the Little Rock Nine. Elsewhere in Little Rock, a series of historic sites honors the contributions of these brave students and the long struggle for Civil Rights.
