The Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area offers one of the few white sand beaches on the Big Island in Hawaii. This park is located 2.3 miles south of Kawaihae, which is on the northwest end of the island. While most people visit to play on the beach and nearby water, a portion of the 175-mile long Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail runs through this park. This recreation area is located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 72 miles northeast of Hilo.

Inside Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area

At this recreation area, you'll enjoy playing on the 0.5-mile long sandy beach. It has been voted many times as one of the most scenic beaches in the United States. Novice snorkelers love the water off the north end of this beach. Jump into the ocean from the cliffs on the south end of this beach or watch the fun. Eat at the 3 Frogs Café before climbing on the large boulders for amazing sunset views.

Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is easy to reach from Kawaihae, Hawaii. Leave town on Hawaii 270 going southeast toward Spencer Beach Road. You'll then turn right on Hawaii 19. Veer slightly right to get on Hapuna Beach Road. Turn left on Old Puako Road. Follow the bends in this road until you reach the park in about 0.1 miles.
