Assateague Island National Seashore

The Assateague Island National Seashore is one of the most exciting reserves in the country. At 37 miles in length, the island is the longest barrier island along the region of the mid-Atlantic states and is but a part of the National Seashore's total area. Adjacent marsh islands, much of the waters between the island and Maryland or Virginia, and the Assateague Island Visitor Center located on Maryland's mainland are included in the 41,346 acres that make up the National Seashore. Officially, the island is divided in two, with Maryland governing the northern section and Virginia handling the south part. Organizations within the preserve include the Assateague State Park and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Over a million visitors seek the wildlife, peaceful beaches, and fishing that this national seashore offers each year by traveling from urban centers like Salisbury, MD, through two local cities—Ocean City, MD, and Chincoteague, VA.
